ODY-C, Cycle One
Matt Fraction / Christian Ward
Hardcover, 400 pages
I found this title while looking for comp titles. The artwork immediately grabbed my attention. I’m a sucker for sci-fi mashups. ODY-C is a gender broken retelling of the Odyssey. You already know the story, but I guarantee you’ll be impressed by Mr. Ward’s artwork.
My favorite word from Cycle One: Witchjack. I’m not entirely sure what is, but I love the sound of it.
From thunder-thighed duel gender Zeus to gimp suited (male) Helen of Troy, ODY-C plays on expectations and twists them just enough. The collection is not for the feint of heart as it graphically explores the theme of sexual assault—themes prevalent in Greek mythology as well.
The bonus sections of the collection have some interesting essays on mythology and story telling, as well as some great process sheets for the artwork.
